The river system of Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is a river state and water harvesting state, innumerable small and big rivers flow here.
The rivers flowing in Uttarakhand have mythological, religious, and cultural significance.

Uttarakhand has three major river systems -

1- Kali river system

2- Ganges river system

3- Alknanda River System

The Kali river system is in Kumaon while the Ganges river system and the Alaknanda river system are in Garhwal



Kali River System -

The Kali River flowing in the Kumaon kali river is the longest in the state of Uttarakhand, originating from the Kalapani region near Pithoragarh, the length of the Kali River is 252 km in the state.

The Kali river is called Shyama in the Puranas. The Kali River is called Kali Gang of Kali gaad in the local language. It flows into Pithoragarh then after entering Champawat enters Nepal from near Barmdev Mandi, Kali river in Nepal is called Sharda.

Kali tributaries and confluence

* The confluence of Kali and Kutayangati takes place at a place called Gunji

* The confluence of Kali and Dhauli Ganga takes place at a place called Khela.

* The confluence of Kali and Gauri takes place at a place called Jauljeevi.

* The confluence of Kali and Saryu takes place at a place called Pancheshwar.

* Lohawati is also a tributary of Kali.

* The last tributary of Kali is Ladhiya, which forms a confluence with Kali at a place called Chuka.

* Then the Kali River enters Nepal under the name Sharda

Saryu river

* Saryu is the holiest river of the Kali river system, it is also the largest tributary of Kali.

* The confluence of Saryu and Gomti takes place in Bageshwar, on 14 January, Uttarayani fair is organized here.

* Baignath temple is at some distance from the confluence. This temple was built by Lakshmi Chand, ruler of the Chand dynasty.

* 1921 At the confluence of the river Saryu and Gomti, Badri Dutt Pandey was torn off the register of coolie labor and pledged not to give coolie labor.
